Farewell…Willie The Wonder Wiener Dog

My kitchen helper, floor cleaner, taster, and expert tomato picker passed away yesterday after 14 1/2 years of bringing our family enormous joy.  What a good little dog, with an enormous personality, who “ruled our house”.

Willie was consistently and doggedly underfoot whenever we were in the kitchen.  He had intense interest in any food we were preparing and exhibited traits which epitomized the hound dog – he was truly a chow hound.

While working on our Tea With Betty recipes, he was there for every one we tested.  He was particularly fond of the savory section in the book.

Here’s a small photo journal of my kitchen helper….

We rarely fed Willie human food…but he sure never missed a chance to try to “score” some… and I am, at times,  a bit of a messy cook.

Willie made several trips to the Napa Valley with us…the first, when he was 12 weeks old, the last, two weeks ago….here he is at one year old enjoying Domaine Chandon with our dear friends…

An older boy…In one of his favorite positions (other than the kitchen), buried under a blanket on the back of the couch…

God Bless You Willie…you are sorely missed already.

  1. Sorry…. hope is was easy for him……:-(

    • Thank you J….it was a rough last day…but quite peaceful the final hours….he was a resilient little guy for sure. Now we hope he is up and running in the spirit world.

  2. Oh so very sorry. Willie the Wonder Weiner Dog Rest in Peace.

    • Thank you so much for your kindness…he certainly seemed peaceful at the last…

  3. Awwww, what a nice tribute to Willie the Weiner Dog. He was definitely a major part of your life, your home, and all of us who visited. He will be missed.

    • Thank you T…..remember him at your river home? I was so worried he’d want to go over the balcony edge…but he was terrified of the water so never went near it…a fond memory as he just sat in my lap the whole weekend…a cuddly little guy.

  4. So sorry for your loss. Sweet dreams little one.

    • Thank you so much…sweet dreams is our prayer for him too.

  5. A little dog with a big personality. I will always remember the jingle of his tags and the warmth of his unconditional love. RIP Willy Wonka the Wonder Wiener Dog, you were loved and most defiantly missed. AV

    • He so loved his Auntie V….thank you for taking such good care of him, in particular the last couple years whenever we needed a warm, loving place for him to stay.

  6. An eloquent description of a life well lived….

    • Thank you Simone… you were intimately involved with the final days of both my lovely dogs…very special for me.

  7. I’m so sorry to hear that:( I have a senior dog as well and they are such special little members of the family…

    • Thank you so much… enjoy each day…

  8. It’s not going to be the same without hearing his bark when I ring your doorbell and then having to give him a proper greeting and ample attention before we can proceed with our meetings. I miss you Willie… the only dog I’ve ever loved.

    • Ahhhh, I’m not sure how we will get our meetings started going forward…he rather “set the tone”, didn’t he? 🙂

  9. Aw, what lovely memories of a fine wee chap. Rest in peace Willie, it’s grand to know that you’ve brought such joy into the world.

    • Thank you Lorna…he did that, brought much joy…he was a happy little food thief 🙂

  10. Being in your house without hearing the click, click, click of Willie’s nails will be a strange thing. This was a beautiful composite of a great dog, a Wonder Dog! He will surely be missed.

    • You know it…the house is empty w/o him…we need some laughing little boys to visit A LOT to perk up this place! 🙂
